Kathleen Marie Jordan Coeburn, VA ~ Kathleen Marie Robinette Jordan, 85 passed away Tuesday, January 1, 2013 at Heritage Hall Health Care Center in Wise Virginia. She was a former employee of Lambert's Pharmacy. She was the daughter of the late Lawrence Charles Robinette and Mary Dee Robinette; also preceded in death by her husband, Fred Jordan; daughter Lark Dee Semple, a son, Freddie Ray Jordan, Grandson, Charles Brandon Semple; brothers, Ray Robinette and Bob Robinette. Survivors include three daughters, Joyce Gray and husband, Rick, Coeburn, Judy Worley, Al, Teresa Fleming, and husband, Matthew, Wise; 14 Grandchildren, several great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

   Visitation Kathleen Marie Jordan will be held after 5:00 P.M. on Thursday, January 3, 2013 Estes Funeral Home Chapel and funeral services will be held at 8:00 PM with Rev. Billy Joe Fritz

Coeburn, VA ~ Billy Joe Roy (BJ) Fritz, 19 passed away Wednesday, January 2, 2013 at University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville Tennessee due to injuries sustained in a car accident.
    He was preceded in death by maternal grandmother, Audrey Harvey; paternal grandparents, Gearldine and Frank Fritz.
   Survivors include his mother, Patsy Gay Harvey, Coeburn; father, George Franklin Fritz, and Melissa (Mama) Muncy, Wise; a son, Skyler Gage Fritz, Clintwood; a sister, Maggie Lee Nell Harvey, Coeburn; a brother, George Robert Fritz, Coeburn; Fiancee, Carla Vaughn, Clintwood; two nephews, Malachi Grozdanoff and xavier Gray; special friend, Logan Cox.

   Visitation for Billy Joe Fritz will be after 5 PM Saturday, January 5, 2013 at Estes Funeral Home Chapel and funeral services will be held at 7:00 P.M. with Rev. Mike Lawson officiating. Cremation will take place after the funeral service. Estes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements

Coeburn, VA ~ Teresa Pauline Swann, 52 passed away Thursday, January 3, 2013 at Mountain View Medical Center in Norton Virginia.
   She was the daughter of the late Cecil Raymond Swann, Sr.  and Joyce Ann Teasley Swann.
   Survivors include a sister, Patty Ann Swann, Cleveland, OH; two brothers, Cecil Raymond Swann Jr., Coeburn, and Robert Lee Swann, Chesepeake, VA; special nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews and a host of friends.
  
   Funeral services for Teresa Pauline Swann will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, January 10, 2013 at Estes Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Johnny Adkins officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Acres Memorial Gardens in Coeburn. Visitation will be held after 6:00 P.M. Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at the funeral home. Coeburn, VA ~ Donnie Lee  "Rooster" Akers, 74 passed away, Monday, January 7, 2013 at his residence in Coeburn Virginia.
    He was the son of the late George Akers and Virgie Akers; also preceded in death by a sister, Louella Adkins, and a brother, Hershel Akers.
    Survivor include two daughters, Lisa Ann Davis, and Ramona Lynn Carter, both of Collinsville, VA; a brother, W. B. Akers, Coeburn; a granddaughter, Crystal Young; a grandson, Steven Davis; 4 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

   Funeral services for Donnie Lee Akers will be held on Friday, January 11, 2013 at 2:00 PM at Estes Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bill Phillips officiating. Coeburn, VA ~ Rosie Naomi Sexton Hamm, 64, passed away Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at Mountain View Medical Center in Norton Virginia.
    She attended Mary's Chapel Church.
    She was the daughter of the late Albert Sexton and Julia Florence Sexton; also preceded in death by a sister, Wanda Carol Anderson; two brothers, Wayne Sexton and Joe Edward Sexton.
    Survivors include her husband, Randall Hamm Sr., Coeburn; two sons, Matthew Hamm, and Randall & Lynette Hamm Jr. , Coeburn, four sisters, Phronsie Jean Miles, and Ardney Opal Moore, both of Coeburn; Eliza Robinson, Warrenton, VA, Syble Fannon; Jarratt, VA; three brothers, Charles Sexton, Jarratt, VA, Bobby Sexton, Baxter, GA and James Sexton, Emporia, VA; one grandson, Alexander Hamm; several nieces and nephews.    She was the daughter of the late Ted McConnell and Lora Gay Barr McConnell; also preceded in death by her husband, Billy Ray Collins; son, Barry Scott Collins and a nephew, Mark Christopher Davenport.
   Survivors include a daughter, Lora Leigh Barrowman, Coeburn; three sisters, Linda (James) Rogers and Anne Christina Hewlett, both of Coeburn and Cathy McConnell, Greenville, TN; three grandsons, Dakota Collins, Jason Mathieson and Blake Stallard; special nephew, Cameron Barrowman.

   She was the daughter of the late Logan Otto Nash and Ida Elizabeth Osborne Nash; also preceded in death by her daughter, Phyllis Freeman; 2 brothers William Ralph Banner Nash and Hogue Everette Nash.
   Survivors include her husband, Dallas Ray Freeman, Shady Spring, WV, one sister, Elizabeth Louise Cox, Taylor Mill, KY; one brother, Kenneth Boyd Nash, Hanover, PA; granddaughter, Erin Nicole Fabian, Baltimore, MD; grandson, Brandon Michael Freeman, Shady Spring, WV; 3 great grandchildren 2 nephews, 1 niece and great nephews and nieces.

    She was the daughter of the late Clarence Bitner and Lilly Goldson Bitner; also preceded in death by her husband, Paul Eugene Ritchie; sister, Reva Lee Porter.

    She worked several years for Mountain Empire Older Citizens.

    She was the daughter of the late Hollis Stevens and Rachael Kiser  Stevens; also preceded in death by her husband, Aubrey William Taylor; 2 brothers, and 2 sisters.

    Survivors include by three sons, Mike Taylor, Castlewood; Steve Taylor, and wife, Lyric, Pass Christian, VA and John Taylor, Coeburn; five  sisters, Sylvia Wolfe, Lebanon, Cathleen French, Mcleansboro, IL,  Blanche Chaffin, Shirley Phillips, and Glenda Cromer, all of Dante; a brother, Henry Stevens, Brook, IN; 4 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

 

   Visitation for Dorothy Ellen Taylor will be held after 12 Noon on Tuesday February 5, 2013  until funeral service at 2:00 PM at Estes Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Terry Rose officiating.    She was preceded in death by her parents, Alice and Covy McCoy, 2 brothers, Harlan and Lewis McCoy and a sister, Shelvy Stewart.
   Survivors include her husband of 66 years, Bennett Kilgore; 2 sons, David (Ida) Kilgore and Donnie (Judy) Kilgore; 2 daughters, Carol (Bernard) Brickey and Leda (Gilbert) Amburgey; a brother, Worley McCoy; 3 sisters, Ossie Branham, Annette Sutherland and Ruth Taylor; 8 grandchildren, Rocky McCowan, Sherry Farmer, David Kilgore, Roni Sue Kilgore, Michelle Taylor, Tammy Artrip, Patty Owens and Dakota Kilgore; 10 great grandchildren, Dalton Owens, Madison McClellan, Noah Trent, Rachael and Grace McCowan, Dustin, Cory, and Harley Farmer, Ashley and Andrew Kilgore, Peyton Kilgore, Seth Hayes and Casey Gray; great-great grandchildren, Brayden, Gavin, Kierah and Kyndall Farmer; special friends and family, Beecher Kilgore, Clarabell McCoy, Larry Hayes, Beka Campbell and Judy Collins and a host of dearly loved Christian family and friends from Coeburn congregation of Jehovaha's Witnesses.

    He  was a retired employee by Clinchfield Coal Co., a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII and a member of Coeburn Masonic Lodge #97 A.F. & A.M.
    He was the son of the late William W. Pedneau, Sr. and Leola Mae Bolling Pedneau; also preceded in death by his wife, Edna Bernice Pedneau.
    Survivors include daughters, Elizabeth Odle, and husband, Jim,  Newark, DE and Susie Powers and husband, Joe, Big Stone Gap; a son, Michael Pedneau, and wife, Roma, Richmond, KY; 6 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren; 1 niece.

    She was the daughter of the late Acy and Caroline Hayes; also preceeded in death by her, Frank Riner Sexton; four sisters, Virginia Daire Hayes, Lola Hayes Sarah Bannie Gimlin and Emily Rasnick; three brothers, Emory L. Hayes, Henry Hazelton Hayes, and George Washington Hayes.
    Survivors include two sons, Buddy Sexton and wife, Freda, St. Paul, VA and Franklin Sexton, OK; 5 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews; special caregiver, Evone Robinson; a host of Church family and good friends.     He was preceded in death by his mother, Ellen Yvonne Winebarger Johnson; brother, Steven Johnson; sister, Debra Johnson; father-in-law, Donald R. Peters.
    Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Donna June Johnson; son, Matthew Johnson; daughter, Amy Johnson; father, Offie D.    He was the son of the late Hobart Harvey Long and Mae Maggie Long; also preceeded in death by his wife,  Sally Wright Long; a sister, Mildred Sullivan; three brothers, Milford Long, Charles L. Long, and Clyde Harvey Long; a granddaughter, Maryann Gambrell Hughes and daughter, Charlotte Ann Long.

    He was the son of the late Earl Freeman and Bertha Cox Freeman; also preceded in death by his wife, Virda Nash Freeman, a daughter, Phyllis Carol Freeman; four sisters, Mildred Freeman, Lois Hickman, Lila Freeman and Myra Freeman; four brothers, Faye Freeman, Conley Freeman, Odell Freeman and Mack Freeman.
    Survivors include a grandson, Brandon Michael Freeman, Shady Spring, WV; a granddaughter, Erin Nicole Fabian, Baltimore, MD; a sister, Shelia Medlin, Spotsylvania, VA; 3 great grandchildren, 2 nephews, 1 niece and great nieces and nephews.

   He  was a retired police officer of the Town of Coeburn. 
   He was the son of the late George Albert Johnson and Fannie Estelle Johnson; also preceeded in death by a sister, Anna Lee Culbertson and two brothers, Dewey Johnson and Charles Johnson.
   Survivors include his wife, Charlotte Gail Vanover Johnson, Coeburn; two daughters, Trella Culbertson, and husband, Tim, Coeburn, and Debbie Powers, and husband, Mike, Wise; a son, George Johnson, Coeburn; one brother, Clinton (Ozzie) Johnson, and wife, Janice, Coeburn; 3 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Loretta will be remembered for her love of family and friends. Her home was a gathering place where everyone was welcome. One of her great loves was to cook and share a meal, everyone was welcome to sit down at her table.

John Adam (Biggs) Collins

Coeburn, VA ~ John Adam (Biggs) Collins was born August 12, 1982 and went to be with the Lord on June 20, 2013 with his loved ones by his side.   John Adam loved many things but his greatest love was reserved for his family. His sudden departure will leave a hole that can never be filled but through memories he will be with us always. As an organ donor, his giving personality continues and through his death others now live.  He passed at Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, TN after suffering from a massive stroke.
   John Adam is survived by his wife Elsie Marie Collins and two loving children Ethan Jacob Adam Collins age 8 and Exavier Glenn Andrew Collins age 2 of Coeburn VA. His mother and step-father Bobby and Diane Collins of Coeburn, VA.  His grandparents Elmer and Pat Sanders of Coeburn, VA.  His father John Biggs of Smithfield, VA. His grandmother Roxanne Biggs Robinson and late Jim Robinson of Coeburn, VA.  His sister Jamie Pate Nickels and niece Skyler Nickels of Coeburn, VA. His step-sister Bobbie Jean Jones and husband Steve and nieces Kaylee and Kacie of Coeburn, VA.  His step-sister Brandi Collins Bostic and husband Kory and nephew Kamden and niece Kayden of Big Stone Gap, VA as well as aunts, uncles, cousins and a host of family and friends that will truly miss him.

   She was a charter member of the Coeburn Civic League, The Red Hats and the Wise County Democratic Women's Club. She was also a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Coeburn.
   She was preceeded in death by her parents, Daniel and Lula Coughlin and her late husband, Frank Clay, Sr.
   Survivors include two sons, James C. Clay and wife, Mary Alice and Frank B. Clay II, all of Coeburn; several nieces and nephews.

   She was a former Pres. of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She was a former beautician in Wise.
   She was the daughter of the late Douglas H. Baker. She was also preceded in death by her grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Milam J. Baker and Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Petrey all formerly of Norton, Va.

Donald Hugh Salyers, Sr.

 Donald Hugh Salyers, Sr., age 75, passed away on Friday August 2, 2013 at his home in Abingdon, Virginia.
   He was born in Coeburn, Virginia to the late Ora Cecil and Opal Irene Kiser Salyers. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Claude Van Salyers, who passed away as an infant.
   He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Opal Amburgey Salyers; two daughters, Donna Salyers Rogers and Roberta Salyers; one son, Donald Hugh Salyers, Jr.; and four grandchildren, Brandon Salyers, Peyton Rogers, Alexandra Rogers and Emma Salyers.
   Don attended Abingdon Baptist Church and was a member of the Board of Deacons. Part of his ministry was sending greeting cards. During his illness he received a large number of cards wishing him well and prayers, which he took great joy in receiving.
   Don attended Coeburn High School and graduated from Margaretta High School in Castalia, Ohio. He was a Veteran of the Armed Forces having served four years in the United States Air Force. He attended Clinch Valley College and then graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education from East Tennessee State University. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Virginia with a Masters Degree in Administration and Supervision. Don worked in education for 30 years in the Wise County and City of Norton Public Schools. He was one of the first Kindergarten teachers in Wise County. He served as Assistant Principal of Coeburn Primary School for seventeen years and on occasion was a part time lecturer at Clinch Valley College. He served as a member of the Coeburn Town Council for 20 years having been Vice Mayor for eight years.
   Don was a devoted member of the Lions Club having joined the Coeburn Lions Club in 1968. He held many offices on the local, district and State levels including District Governor of Virginia Lions of District 24-F, Secretary-Treasurer, Public Relations Chairman, Sight-First Chairman, Zone Chairman, Deputy District Governor, Public Relations Chairman, Leader Dog Chairman, Leadership Development Chairman, District Credentials Committee, and Nominations Committee for numerous State Conventions. He received numerous awards including Certificate of Appreciation from the President of Lions Clubs International, The Lion of the Year Award, 100% Presidents Award, the 100% Secretary's Award, District Governor's Appreciation Award, numerous 100% Attendance Awards and was a Melvin Jones Fellow. He also served as the Official Photographer for District 24-F for many years.
   Don was commissioned a Kentucky Colonel in 1988 by then Governor Wallace G. Wilkinson. He was named as one of the Outstanding Elementary Teachers of America and was a lifetime member of the Virginia PTA.
   Don was an avid amateur photographer and was rarely seen without camera in hand. Don was also a member of the following organizations: The American Legion, Highlands Camera Club, International Freelance Photographers Organization, United Commercial Travelers, National Education Association, Virginia Education Association and Washington County Retired Teachers Association.

   Funeral services for Donald Hugh Salyers, Sr. will be held on Monday, August 5, 2013 at 2:00 PM at Abingdon First Baptist Church with Rev. Steve Pollard officiating, with visitation from 12 noon till funeral time. Burial will be Monday, August 5, 2013 at Greenwood Acres Memorial Gardens.  Coeburn, VA - Jonathan Daniel Hayes, 37, of Coeburn, VA, passed away on Friday, September 20, 2013, at his home. 
    He was born July 18, 1976, in Norton, VA. Jonathan was a graduate of Coeburn High School in Coeburn, VA and served in the National Guard and then the U.S. Army. 
    Jonathan was an avid sports fan and loved collecting sports cards. Jonathan was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Emory and Barbara Osborne and his paternal grandparents, Henry and Annie Hayes. 
    He is survived by his parents, Doug and Sheila Hayes of Coeburn, VA; two sons, Ethan Hayes of Coeburn, VA.; Logan Hayes of Coeburn, VA.; one sister, Melanie Lane (Shawn) of Norton, VA.; and a very special nephew Scott Lane of Norton, VA.; along with a host of friends. The family would like to extend a special thank-you to Norton Hospice and Palliative Care, the VA Medical Center in Salem VA, Tammy Snyder from the VA Center, and Jennifer Mundy from the ALS Foundation for their help and support during this difficult time.

   She was predeceased by her mother, Charsey Mae Willis.
   Survivors include by her husband, Earnest Junior 'Junebug' Williams, Coeburn; father, Clarence Willis, Appalachia; two daughters,Tammy Mae Page, Clintwood, and Ashley Pauline Gaulke, Coeburn; two sons, Shannon Charles Johnson, and Earnest James Williams, both of Coeburn; two sisters, Bonnie Kennedy, and Betty Jean Johnson, all of Coeburn; a brother, Clarence Ray Willis , Coeburn; 6 grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Dennis Clayton Boggs, Sr, 63, was called home by his Heavenly Father on Thursday, October 10, 2013 at Bristol Regional Hospital with his wife of 43 years and family by his side.
   Dennis was preceded in death by his daughter, Denise Boggs, his father and mother, Oliver and Bessie Young Boggs, brothers Ralph Boggs, Jimmy Boggs Donald Boggs and Carson Boggs, and a sister Helen Boggs Hammonds.
   Dennis is survived by his loving wife, Threva Boggs. A son Dennis and Natasha Boggs of Coeburn. A Daughter Tishia and Sam Adams of Coeburn. He had three amazing grandsons whom he loved dearly, Logan Adams, Jacob Adams and Hunter Harrison, all of Coeburn. He is survived by sisters Marie and Allan Adams of Valdosta, Ga., Libby and Mike Smith of Coeburn, Va,, Maxie and Bobby Couch of Coeburn, Va., and Eunice and Charlie Miller of Castlewood, Va. He is survived by two brothers Oliver Boggs of Brushy Ridge, Va., and Joe Boggs of Georgia.
   Dennis was an avid HAM Radio enthusiast. He went by the Call Sign AD4NZ and he enjoyed this the greater part of the last 20 years. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his family.

   Visitation will be Saturday, October 12, 2013 at Estes Funeral Home Chapel from 5-7. The funeral will be at 7 P.M. in the chapel with Brother R.L. Crawford speaking. Graveside will be Sunday, October 13,2013 at Kilgore Cemetary in Coeburn, Va. at 2 pm. Family and friends will precede to the graveside at 1:30 from Estes Funeral Home.    She was a retired nurse and was a former resident of Louisville, Ky.
   She was the daughter of the late Robert Thompson and Lillie Matilda Buchanan; also preceded in death by her husband, Clinton C. Cook II; son, Clinton C. Cook III, Sisters, Mary Catherine Holbrook Klemann and Medford Susie Hall; Brothers, Clayborn Buchanan and Edison Buchanan.
  Survivors include a daughter Virginia Carol Pike, and husband, Kirk, Cincinati, OH; 4 grandchildren, several great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

    He was born October 28, 1933 to Arlie E. Mullins and Cynthia Stanley Mullins.
    He was a retired coal miner who spent 40 years providing for his family. In his free time he loved to bee keep, fish, hunt and farm. He volunteered for Sandy Ridge Fire Department and Rescue Squad.
    Denver was preceded in death by his parents, Arlie E. and Cynthia Mullins, his paternal grandparents, Lovell Meek Henderson and Ollie Stanley Mullins, his Maternal grandparents, Love and Nancy Jane Stanley; his brothers, Henry H. Mullins, Acie E. Mullins and Columbus Junior Mullins; two sisters, Verdie Rose and Virginia Mullins.
    Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Oma Moore Mullins, two daughters, Janice (Donald) Staire, Wise, and Sandra Kay (Gomer) Clark, Clincho; one son, Rickie  (Carrie) Mullins, Coeburn; a sister, Christine Mullins, Clintwood; three  brothers, Ira E.    He was born in Marshall, N.C. FEB.4, 1941 to Olin Shelton and Allie Shelton; Also of preceded in death by Two Sisters, Ada Jean Shelton and Betty Reed.

   Mr. Shelton was a coal miner for many years and he also was a horse enthusiast and loved to ride his horse named Bandit.

   He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Betty Lou McCoy Shelton; 3 sons, Dale Gordon Shelton, Jr. and wife, Clara, St. Paul, VA, Ricky Hayes and wife, Selina, St. Paul, VA and Robert Hayes, Coeburn; 3 Daughters, Kim and spouse, Rick Pharris, Nashville, TN, Cindy Gilbert, St. Paul, VA. and Peggy Thacker and spouse, Stewart, Coeburn; HE HAS 13 Grandchildren, 10 Great grandchildren; Several nieces, nephews and a host of other family and friends who will miss him greatly.

   Coeburn, Va - David Franklin Addington, Sr. 82, of Coeburn, Va. and briefly a resident of Liberty, In. died peacefully in his sleep Sunday December 1, 2013 at his daughter's home where he was residing.
   He was born July 1, 1931 in Banner Va.
   His parents were Fleetwood Addington and Maggie Harvey Addington. He
was a retired coal miner. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: Gilmer and Eugene Addington, and a son-in-law, Douglas Garwood.
   He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Pauline Stapleton Addington, a daughter, Dinah Garwood, Liberty, IN; four sons, Gilmer Addington and his wife Christy, Indianapolis, IN; Tom Addington and his wife, Sarah, Pleasant Hill, OH, Bill Addngton and wife, Karen, Coeburn, David Addington, Jr. and wife Melody, Westfield. IN; brother, Issac Addington and wife, Evelyn, West Point, VA; a sister, Gerfus McReynolds, Coeburn, Va. nine grandchildren, “20 1/2” great grandchildren, serveral nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

   Wanda June McArthur Bates, 79, of Coeburn, passed away Sunday December 22, 2013 at Mountain View Regional Medical Center in Norton.
   Known as “June” by family and friends, she was a resident of the Tacoma community of Coeburn until five years ago, when she became a resident of the Long Term Care Unit at Mountain View. June loved to cook prior to her illness, and was known for her cakes and candies. One of her favorite summer pastimes was canning vegetables and making preserves and jellies, which she was always sharing with friends and family.  She also loved to fish.
   June doted on her two grandchildren, who were the lights of her life.
   Survivors include her husband Fred J. Bates, son Charlie Bates and wife Pam, granddaughter Regina Bates, grandson Matthew Bates, numerous nieces and nephews, and grand-nieces and nephews.
   The family would like to thank all the staff of Mountain View’s Long Term Care and Intensive Care Units, the nursing staff, ancillary departments, and the residents and physicians who cared for her with compassion and excellence over the past few years, and again over the course of the past few weeks during her acute illness. It is impossible to adequately convey our gratitude for the comfort she received, as well as the patience and love extended to her husband Fred during his daily visits. We would also like to thank Wellmont’s Hospice Care for their brief but kind support.

Coeburn, VA - Wanda Faye Louise Edwards passed away December 23rd after a battle with cancer.
   Wanda attended Clinch Valley College and Mountain Empire Community College. She worked for many years as a nurse.
   Though she lived for a brief period in Silver Spring, MD, she was a lifelong resident of the Riverview Community in Coeburn, VA. Wanda was a longtime member of Mary's Chapel Church in Coeburn.
   Wanda was preceded in death by her parents Willard E. Edwards and Viola Dingus Edwards, her brother, Buford Ray Edwards, and her nephew, Michael Edwards.
    She is survived by her brother Delmar Lee Edwards.

   Memorial services will be held 7:00 P.M. Friday, December 27, 2013 at Estes Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Marty Puckett officiating.
