Barbara Ann Bright

Coeburn, VA ~ Barbara Ann Harris Bright, 66,  passed away Saturday, January 8, 2011 at Norton Community Hospital in Norton Virginia.
   She  was a retired nurse of Norton Community Hospital and former captain of Coeburn Rescue Squad.
  She was the daughter of the late Arnold Edward and  Hazel Ann Harris; also preceeded in death  by one sister, Margie Francis Teasley; three brothers, Delbert Harris, Carl Harris and Joseph Bruce Harris.
   She is survived by her husband, Roger Lynn Bright; one daughter,  Anninita Dawn McConnell, Coeburn; three sons, Arthur L. Bright, Edward Norris Bright, and Eric Cameron Bright, all of Coeburn; one sister, Betty May Harris, Rockville, MD; two brothers, Raymond Donald 'Donnie' Harris, Falls Church, VA and  Roger Lee Harris, Reo Rancho, NM; 9 grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

   Funeral services for Barbara Ann Bright will be held on Thursday, January 13, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Estes Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. R. L. Crawford officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwood Acres Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held Wednesday after 6:00 P.M. at Estes Funeral Home. Arrangements by Estes Funeral Home, 114 High Ave., Coeburn, VA.

Coeburn, VA ~ Francis Harvey Lane, 75, died Saturday, January 15, 2011 at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport Tennessee.
   She was the daughter of the late Kelly Mitchell and Alice  Harvey; also preceeded in death by her husband, Ellis Robert Lane; two sons, Dale Lane, and Glen Alan Lane; four sisters, Judy Ann Burgett, Odra Bell Harvey, Della Hardy, and Crystal Adkins; four brothers, Dewey Harvey, Clayton Harvey, Rush Harvey, and Raymond Harvey.
     Survived by one daughter, Wanda Penley, Coeburn; three sons, David D. Lane, St. Paul, Norman K. Lane, and Gary L. Lane, both of Coeburn; one brother, Charlie Ray Harvey, Norton, VA; 13 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

   Visitation for Francis Lane will be held after 6:00 P.M,  Monday, January 17, 2011 at Estes Funeral Home Chapel and funeral services will be held at 7:00 PM with Rev. Joe Dearry officiating. Burial will be 11 AM Tuesday January 18, 2011 at Harvey Family Cemetery. Arrangements by Estes Funeral Home, 114 High Ave., Coeburn, VA.

Nannie Pearl Helbert

Beavercreek, OH ~ Nannie Pearl Hamilton Helbert, 85 died Friday, January 14, 2011 at the Masonic Nursing Home in Springfield, Ohio.
    Nannie lived most of her life in Coeburn, Virginia, and was a member of  Coeburn Church of God of Prophecy, but had lived in Ohio for the past 10 years.
    She was the daughter of the late Lafayette and Cynthia Hamilton; also preceeded in death by her husband, Robert "Bob" Helbert; granddaughter, Mary Elizabeth Helbert and several brothers and sisters.
    Survivors include one daughter, Janice A. Cox, Beavercreek, OH; two son, Jimmy Edward Helbert, Bluff City, and Carl Wesley Helbert, Ashcamp, KY; 10 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

   Visitation for Nannie Pearl Helbert will be held on Tuesday January 18, 2011 after 5:00 P.M at the Coeburn Church of God of Prophecy on Grand Ave. and funeral services will be held at 7:00 PM with Rev. Titus Anderson and Brother Jibber Ward officiating. Burial will be Wednesday January 19, 2011 at Hamilton Cemetery. The family will meet at the church at 11 A.M. and leave in procession.

Lloyd Leon Powers

Coeburn, VA ~ Lloyd Leon 'Ripcord' Powers, 88, passed away Sunday, January 16, 2011 at Mountain View Medical Center in Norton Virginia.
   Mr. Powers was a U.S. Army  veteran of WW II.
    He was the son of the late Allen Crit and Fannie Cecile Kelly Powers; also preceeded in death by his wife, Jeanette Powers; daughter, Tommie Mullins; sisters, Ethel Stallard, Nannie Irene Counts, and Hazel Lawson; brothers, Charles Allen Powers, Frank Powers, and Worley Powers.
    Survivors include one daughter, Sandy Salyer, and husband, Johnny, Coeburn; sons, Gary Powers, Wise; special friend, Phyllis Stanley; 6 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

   Visitation for Lloyd Leon Powers will be held on Tuesday January 18, 2011 after 6:00 P.M. at Estes Funeral Home Chapel and funeral services will be held at 7:00 P.M.  with Rev. Charlie Couch and Rev. Ron Duncan officiating. Burial will be Wednesday January 19, 2011 at Laurel Grove Cemetery. The family will meet at the funeral home at 1:00 P.M. and leave in procession. Coeburn, VA ~ Eary Oswald Adkins, 60, passed away Monday, January 17, 2011 at his residence in Coeburn Virginia.
    He was a member of Mt. Olivet Church.
    Survivors include his wife, Nikki Lawson Adkins; sons, Tyson Adkins, Bristol, VA and Marcus Adkins, Bristol, TN; one granddaughter, Alexis and one grandson, Grady.

   Visitation for Eary Oswald Adkins will be held on Wednesday, January 19, 2011 after 6:00 P.M. at Estes Funeral Home Chapel and funeral services will be held at 7:00 P.M. with Brian Rose officiating. Roy Swanson Baker

Dungannon, VA ~ Roy Swanson Baker, 84 died Monday, January 17, 2011 after a long battle with cancer at Holston Manor in Kingsport, Tennessee.
    He was a retired employee of Powahtan Correction Center where he worked for 28 years and was a member of Pine Grove Freewill Baptist Church, Ft. Blackmore. Also a U.S. Army veteran of WW II.
    He was the son of the late George Henry and Cansia Baker; also preceded in death by his wife, Lola Baker; one daughter, Anita Faye Owens; two sisters, Eirma Lois Laney, Allene Jackson; four brothers, Otis Baker, Luther 'Dick' Baker, Edwin Cecil Baker and Ray Baker.
    Survivors include, one son, David Wayne Baker, and wife, Barbara, Fort Blackmore, VA; one sister-in-law, Jeanette Baker, Coeburn; 2 granddaughters, 2 grandsons, several great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

   Visitation for Roy Swanson Baker will be held on Thursday January 20, 2011 after 5:00 P.M. at Estes Funeral Home Chapel and funeral services will be held 7:00 PM with Rev. Castlewood, VA ~ Maria Summers Hensley, 55, passed away Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at Johnson City Medical Center in Johnson City Tennessee.
    She was the daughter of Thomas Summers and Ursula Summers.
   She was preceeded in death by her father Thomas Summers and husband, Steven Hensley.
   Survivors include two sons, Rick Hensley, Castlewood, and Thomas Hensley, Charleston, WV; mother, Ursula Summers of Germany; one sister, Linda Obsieger of Germany; 5 grandchildren, several nieces & nephews.

Mrs. Hensley was cremated. A memorial/dinner will be held Sunday, Jan. 23, 2011 at 6 P.M at the Eagles Club in Castlewood. Arrangements by Estes Funeral Home, Coeburn, VA.

Coeburn, VA ~ Linda G. Harvey Brickey, 65 passed away, Friday, January 21, 2011 at her residence in Coeburn Virginia.
    She was the daughter of the late Corbett and Gladys Marie Harvey; also preceeded in death by a daughter, Melissa Ann Brickey, son, Curtis Wayne Brickey; five brothers, Roger Lee Harvey Sr., Douglas McArthur Harvey, Delmar Harvey, Curtis Harvey and Kermit Charles Harvey.
    Survivors include her husband, Curtis C. Brickey; one son, William Richard Brickey, Coeburn, VA;  four sisters, Joann McConnell, Richmond, VA, Virginia Sue Adkins, Johnson City, TN, Brenda Kay Wade, and Nadine Marie Finch, both of Coeburn; two brothers, Eddie Harvey, Richmond, VA and Rex Allen Harvey, Bristol, TN; five Grandchildren, Chandra Brianne, Acelynn Jade, Teddy, Mikey and Chandler.

Vansant, VA ~ Lillian Virginia Sluss Hale, 89,  passed away Monday, January 31, 2011 at Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol Tennessee
   Mrs. Hale was a member of Looney's Methodist Church in Vansant.
    She was the daughter of the late Barney Bascum and Nannie Sluss; also preceeded in death by her beloved husband, Lonnie Hale; three sisters, Hortense Hale, Gracie Estil Sluss and Pearl Mae Corder; one brother, Barney Baze "Buddy" Sluss.
   Survivors include, one daughter, Mary Ann Deel, and husband, Bruce of Bristol, TN; three sons, Jackie Lee Hale, Jerry Hale, Joey Hale, and wife, Peggy, all of Vansant; 5 grandchildren, Jackie Lynn Stacey, Lea Ann Deel "Wilson", Joey L. Hale, Tiffany S. Salley and Christopher Hale;  2 great gradnchildren, Brandon and Brittany Stacey; several nieces and nephews.

Coeburn, VA ~ Theordius 'Bud'  Miller, 83 passed away  Saturday, February 12, 2011 at his residence in Coeburn Virginia.
   He  was a member of UMWA.
   He was the son of the late Douglas Fairbanks Miller and Mamie  Miller; also preceeded in death by one daughter, Fanetta Banks; one son, Douglas Fairbanks Miller Sr.; two sisters, Rosalee Sanders and  Katherine Adams; one brother, Willie Talford.
   Survivors include, special friend and mother, Mamie Courtney; five daughters, Rebecca Felix, Raleigh, NC, Wanda Forney, Baltimore, MD, Cynthia "Miller" Courtney, Coeburn, Elizabeth Hill, Norton, and Tina Thompson, Upper Marlboro, MD; four sons, Kenneth Miller , Jacksonville, NC, Robert Miller, John "Miller" Courtney and Theodore 'Moe' "Miller" Courtney, all of Coeburn; Several grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and sons-in law and daughters-in-law.

Coeburn, VA ~ Gregory Dean Pennington,  53 passed away Sunday, February 13, 2011 at Norton Community Hospital in Norton Virginia.
   He  was employed by Virginia Department of Transportation for 27 years.
  Preceeded in death by his father, Erskine Dale Pennington and a sister, Patricia Ann Hamilton.
   Survivors include his mother, Joan Marie Pennington, Coeburn; three brothers, Gary Ray Pennington, Larry Wayne Pennington, and Thomas Dale Pennington, all of Coeburn, VA.

   Visitation for Gregory Dean Pennington will be held after 5:00 PM on Wednesday, February 16, 2011 at Estes Funeral Home Chapel and funeral services will be held at 7:00 P.M.  with Rev. James Wilson officiating. Burial will be Thursday February 17, 2011 at 1:00 P.M. Temple Hill Memorial Park. The family will meet at the funeral home at 12:15 P.M. St. Paul, VA ~  Mozell 'Nig' Bond Hamm, 81, passed away Saturday, February 19, 2011 at her residence at Sandy Ridge.
    She spent most of her married life in Sandusky where she was employed by Firelands Regional Medical Center for 21 years.
    She was the daughter of the late Loranza 'Ranza' Bond and Luvenia K. Bond; also preceded in death by 12 brothers and sisters.
    She loved spending time with her kids, grandkids and great grandkids, also enjoyed crocheting. Due to her failing health the past few years she served the Lord from her home and sought his love and strength through trying times.
   Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Freddie C. Hamm, St. Paul; 3 daughters, Rhonda Matter, and husband David, North Fort Myers, FL, Sharon Miller, and husband, Richard, Castalia, OH, Karen Meade, and husband, Randall, Sandy Ridge; 2 sons, Rick Hamm, and Peggi, Bellevue, OH, and Randy Hamm, St. Paul; 12 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, several neices and nephews.

Coeburn, VA ~  Ralph Edward 'Cooboy' Ring  Jr., 74,  passed away peaceful Saturday, February 19, 2011 at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport Tennessee.
   He was a past employee of VICC Coal Company and and Ring Coal. He enjoyed the outdoors with his dog Rascal and working in the garden.   
   He was preceded in death by his parents Ralph and Nell Ring, one sister, Betty Jean Ring and a brother Roy Joe Ring.
  He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Shirley Ring; niece/daughter, Sherry Lynn Armbruister; one sister, Anna Ruth Richardson (Johnny), Coeburn; three brothers, Willis Ring (Pat), Big Stone Gap,  Sam Ring (Ruby), Norton, and John Ring (Dorothy), Coeburn; sister-in-law, Peggy Satterfield, Coeburn; special friends, Jeff and Kim Robinette and Ronald Porter; special niece, Betty J. Kern and a host of nieces and nephews.

Louisville, KY ~ Rev. James Enoch 'Jim' Mullins,  69, passed away Thursday, February 24, 2011 at Hosparus In Patient Care Center in Louisville, Kentucky.
   He  was a United Methodist Minister for 20 years serving several churches in Kenucky. He also served a police officer for 10 years in Coeburn, Virginia, in the U.S. Army for 10 years during the Vietnam Era. Also was a member of Irvington Masonic Lodge, Irvington, KY. 
  He was  the son of the late Dallas C. Mullins and  Janice Velmo Mullins.
  Survivors include his wife,  Lois Reed Mullins, Louisville, KY; Three  Daughters, Jananette L. Mullins, Pheonix, and Lovalerie L. Mullins, both of Pheonix, AZ, Jimmi Savannah Stone, Laconia, IN; One Son, Joshua Enoch Mullins, Louisville, Ky.; One Sister, Ieata Mullins, Coeburn; Two Brothers, Harless Avery Mullins , Coeburn, and Roger Allen Mullins, Abingdon, VA; 7 grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

   He was the son of the late Maynard Ralph Hill; also preceded in death by his wife, Judy Deel Hill; a daughter, Amanda Kay Clevenger.
   Survivors include his mother, Alcie Mae Hill, Coeburn; one daughter, Linda Hill, Charleston, WV; eight sisters, Rosa Lee Moore, Dungannon, Violet Marie Ball, Ashville, NC, Glenda Mae Castle, Haysi, Rhonda Joyce Taylor, Pound, Lillie Jean Hileman, St. Paul, Rebecca Jo Mooney and Crystal Denise Perrigan, both of Coeburn, Patrica Lynn Hill, Big Stone Gap; two brothers, Maynard Ralph Hill Jr., Coeburn, and David Mark Hill , St. Paul; one granddaughter, Paisley Shae Blevins ; one grandson, Michael Paul Hill and several nieces and nephews.

Coeburn, VA ~ James Michael Gleason, Jr., 84 passed away Saturday, March 19, 2011 at Norton Community Hospital in Norton Virginia.
    He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of WW 2.
    He was the son of the late James Michael Gleason, Sr. and Carrie Amanda Gleason; also preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Richardson Gleason.
    Survivors include one son, William E. Odle Sr., Dallas, TX; one sister, Doris Nellie Jeeter, Baltimore, MD and grandson, William E. Odle, Jr. and several nieces and nephews.

   Visitation for James Michael Gleason, Jr. will be held after 6:00 P.M. on Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at Estes Funeral Home Chapel and funeral services will be held at 7:30 PM with Rev. R. L. Crawford officiating. Burial will be Thursday March 24, 2011 at Greenwood Acres Memorial Gardens. Military graveside service will be furnished by Coeburn V.F.W. Juanita Bond

Juanita "Nita" Turner Bond

Coeburn, VA ~ Juanita "Nita" Turner Bond, 101, passed away Thursday, March 24, 2011 at Mountain View Medical Center in Norton Virginia.
   She was born Sept. 18, 1909 to the late Henry E. and Lucy Geneva Hilliman Turner; also preceded in death by her husband, E. H. Bond; sisters, Betty C. Rothwell and Alice Counts; brother and sister-in-law, Dr. R. R. Turner & Mary Ruth Turner; nephew, Robbie Rothwell.
   Nita was a lifelong resident of Coeburn, and was a retired school teacher. Having taught school in Coeburn, Riverview, and Tacoma for 35 years. After retiring she then worked for Headstart for 25 years, retiring at age 96.
   She was a member of South Coeburn United Methodist Church, where she played the piano until her death.
   Survivors include, special friend, Betty Hughes; nieces, Lynn Allio, South Carolina;  Ellen Gutierrez, Nashville, TN and Cindy Rothwell, Florida, and caregiver, Wanda Hughes.

   Nita's request was to be cremated. Graveside Memorial service will be held May 8, 2011 at3:00 P.M.  in Greenwood Acres Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are being handled by Estes Funeral Home, 114 High Ave. NE, Coeburn, VA.

Donald Denton Kennedy Coeburn, VA ~ Donald Denton Kennedy, 60, went to be with the Lord, Sunday, April 10, 2011 at his residence in Coeburn Virginia. He was an ex-coal miner and at his onset of sickness he was working for Liberty Towing. He was the son of the late John W. Kennedy and Luellen C. Kennedy; also preceded in death by brother, Johnny Kennedy; step-son, Shannon Mullins. Survivors include his wife, Tonia Mullins Kennedy, Coeburn; son, Donald Dewayne Kennedy, and wife, Amber, Coeburn; daughters, Heather Faye Courtney, and husband, Antwan, and Christa LeeAnn Odle, and husband, Jason all of Coeburn; brothers, Bobby Kennedy, Ohio, and Ronnie Kennedy, Coeburn; sister, Fredia Bush, Coeburn; Grandchildren, Dawson and Trevan Vanover of the home, Emily Kennedy, Coeburn, Nicky Mullins, Kiah Mullins, Dakota Mullins and their mom, Tammy Mullins of Jenkins, Ky., Colby Mullins and mom, Amanda Collins of Coeburn, Malachi Courtney and Stephanie Johnson of Coeburn, Justin, Cody, Tristan and Haley Issacs of Coeburn; several nieces and nephews. Coeburn, VA ~  Luther William Nichols, 89, went home to the Lord, Monday, May 9, 2011 at Hospice House of South Carolina in Landrum, South Carolina.
     He was a retired coal miner employed by Pittston Coal Company, former owner and operator of Nichols Floor Covering in Coeburn, a member of UMWA, a former police officer for the Town of Appalachia and a former member of Coeburn Masonic Lodge. Also a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII. He was also a member and deacon of the First Baptist Church in Coeburn, serving on several committees.
    Luther was the son of the late John W. and Mollie Nichols.
    Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Ruth Fulcher Nichols; one daughter, Patsy Grogan, Landrum, SC; one granddaughter, Kim Swayngham, Landrum, SC; one grandson, William Shaun Grogan, Clarksville, TN; 5 great grandchildren.

Tacoma, VA ~ Arvel Elkins went home to be with the Lord May 16, 2011, at the age of 91.
   Arvel was born and raised on the Elkins farm in Tacoma in 1920. He was a simple man who lived a long happy life. He graduated from Coeburn High School in 1939 and was a veteran of World War II. He participated in the liberation of Western Pacific battles and campaigns with several stars and metals. He has been a member of the Coeburn Masonic Lodge #97 since 1964, and a long time member of the Tacoma Freewill Baptist Church and committed his life to serving the Lord.
   He and his wife Nellie owned and operated flower shops in Coeburn and St. Paul for many years. His favorite hobbies were gardening and raising rabbits.
   He was preceeded in death by his father, Clinton Elkins, mother, Hattie Jane
Elkins, brothers Estel, Aldon, Silas, Harry, sisters Margaret, Nancy, Coleen, a
daughter Martha Ann, and step-mother, Zelma Elkins.
   Survivors are, wife of 61 years, Nellie Elkins; daughters, Pam Nixon and Sherri Meade, son in laws Crockett Nixon and Brian Meade, grandchildren, Jessica Nixon, Haley Hale, Josh Kilgore, Erika Kilgore, Andrea Kilgore, Evan Meade and Tammy Graham, brothers, Albert, Claude, Paul, and Earl Elkins, and several
special nieces,nephews and friends.

Bond, father, Charles Walker Bond, one son, Randy Dale Sartin, five sisters, Maxie Davis, Lillian Audrey Vaughn, Mary Palmer, Ollie Mae Jordon, and Lakie A. Caldwell; four  brothers, Maynard Bond, Wallace Bond, Robert C. 'Bud' Bond and James 'Jim' Bond.
     She is survived by two sons, Ricky Sartin, West Monroe, LA and Roger D. Sartin, Coeburn; 9 grandsons, Marcus Sartin, Chad Sartin, Shannon Sartin, Jason Sartin, Chris Sartin, Jeromy Sartin, Derek Sartin, Giles Sartin and Shon Sartin. 1 granddaughter, Jessica Mabe and 19 great grandchild.

Coeburn, VA ~ Maurien A. Davis Bevins, 87 went to be with the Lord, Tuesday, August 2, 2011 at Indian Path Medical Center in Kingsport Tennessee after a period of declining health.
   She  was born June 14, 1924 in Wise County VA.
   She spent most of her entire life in the Lyons Fork area and was a faithful member of Davis Chapel Church and sang in the Davis Quaret for many years.
   She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Bevins, her parents, E.P. "Short" and Ava Hutchinson Davis; a sister, Goldie Davis Beverly; niece, Lynn Beverly Baker.
   She is survived by special caregivers, Ottis and Juanita Mullins, whom the Lord blessed her with and many cousins and friends.

   Funeral service for Maurien A. Davis Bevins will be held 1:00 P.M. Saturday, August 6, 2011 at Estes Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Clifford Bevins and Rev. Terry Davis officiating. Burial will follow at the Hutchinson Cemetery, Duncan Gap in Wise, VA. Visitation will be held after 6:00 P.M. Coeburn, VA ~ Retha Andeline Hayes LaMasters, 73, went to be with the Lord Thursday, August 11, 2011 at Norton Community Hospital in Norton Virginia.
    She was the daughter of the late William Henry Hayes and Cinderella 'Ellen' Hayes; also preceeded in death by her husband, Lawrenc Patrick LaMasters, Sr.; four sisters, Julia Brown Adams, Nancy Harris, Trula Adams, Alleda G. Hayes; five brothers, Emory L. Hayes, Garland Hayes, Rufus Hayes, Clair Wetzel Hayes and Henry Nelson Hayes.
    Survivors include a daughter, Carinna Meade, Norton; son and daughter-in-law, Lawrence 'Larry' Patrick LaMasters Jr. and Vicki, Coeburn, five grandchildren,  Merari, Lawrence and Jordan Lamasters, Randall 'Mackie' Tickles and Sara Meade.

Delmar James Smith, Sr., 73 passed away August the 12th, 2011, after a short illness, at his Mountain top home near Dungannon VA. Bonnie and Delmar Jr. were there with him. Delmar was survived by two familys. Shirley and their two children, Beverley and Steve of Wise VA. Bonny and their son Delmar JR. of Dungannon VA. Delmar was one of 13 children born to the late, Tom and Ogla (Campbell)Smith of Coeburn VA. Delmar was preceded in death by three brothers, Thomas, Buster and Jerry. He was survived by 9 brothers and sisters, Betty,Raymond, Ada, Sue,Johnny,Mary Ann, Jim,Rocky and Sammy, also survived by a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends who will miss him. Delmar was a veteran of the US Navy. A service and celebration of his life, time and place will be announced later. Estes Funeral Home of Coeburn Virginia are in charge of all arrangements.

    He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Evone Abbott; three daughters, Kathy Wright, and husband, Larry, Nancy Fleming, Betty Bruner, and husband, Jared all of Coeburn; one son, David 'Crockett' Abbott, and wife, Debbie, Lenoir City, TN; one sister, Dora 'Doddie' Gibson, and husband, Mickey, Strawberry Plains, TN two brothers-In-Law, David Fields, Knoxville, TN and Charlie Fields, Lenoir City, TN; 13 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

    She is survived by three daughters, Flo L. Porter, and Carolyn M. Swanson, and husband, Daniel all of Abingdon, VA and Susan Brooks, and husband, Danny Coeburn, VA; one son, Ralph C.     She was the daughter of the late Thomas Edison Hamm and Ruby Hamm; one  brother, Billy Ray Hamm.
    Survivors include her loving husband of 50 years, Bobby Darrel Mann, Coeburn, VA; daughter, Lisa Mann, and husband, David Osborne,Coeburn; son, Jamie Mann, and  wife, Katrina, Coeburn, two brothers, James E.     He was the son of the late Samuel and Ollie Adkins Funk; also preceeded in death by one sister, Julia Funk; four brothers, Alex Funk, Hoover Funk, Fred Funk and Paul Funk.     
    Survivors include one son, Douglas Lee Funk Jr., and wife, Tracy Bond Funk, Coeburn, four brothers, Bruce Funk, Ulysses Funk, Emmitt Funk, and Bascom Funk, all of Coeburn; two granddaughters, Brittany Funk and Makayla Funk, Coeburn and several nieces and nephews.

    He was a retired coal miner and a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II.
    He was the son of the late Benjamin Fairbanks Hartsock and Martha Jane Hartsock; brother, Robert Dean Hartsock.
    He is survived by wife, Maxine Ring Hartsock, Dungannon, VA, three daughters, Karen Hartsock, Jackie L. Taylor and Robin L. Howington, all of Dungannon; two  sisters, Vendetta Jane Davis, and Mattie Beverly, both of Coeburn; one brother, Russell Hartsock; 5 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceeded in death by her husband, Arvel Elkins,daughter, Martha Ann Brummett, parents, Roy and Ida Whited, and a sister, Mrs. John 'Dot' Graham and a brother, Elwood Whited. Danny Louis Robinette Coeburn, VA ~ Danny Louis Robinette, 63 our husband, dad, grand dad, brother, friend and God's child went to a better home, Thursday, October 13, 2011, our loss, his presence with the Lord. He died at home Thursday Morning. He loved to sing and fellowship with his friends and church family and he will be missed as a true withness of his Christian faith. Mr. Robinette is a retired employee of Clinchfield and Cumberland River Coal and attended Pine Camp Church of God of Prophecy. Coeburn, VA - Al'Frances Kennedy Rowlett, age 93, passed away Monday, Oct 31, 2011 in Bristol, VA.
   She was born on Caney Ridge in Dickenson County, near Coeburn, VA.
   She was the daughter of the late Estle E. and Crada Kennedy.
   Al'Frances was preceeded in death by her husband, Herbert G. Rowlett; siblings, K. Kipling Kennedy, O'Hara Kennedy, Mattie Jeanne Martin and Janis Wiggin and Estle Kennedy, Jr.
   Survivors include 2 sisters, Louise Kennedy Smith Kilgore and Sara Jane Kennedy; Brothers, Jon Forrest Kennedy, Kim Kennedy, Carol Kennedy, Randall Kennedy and Wade Kennedy; several special nieces and nephews; one dear sister-in-law, Leona Kennedy.
   Al'Frances was a graduate of Clintwood High School and attended Bluefield Business College in Bluefield, VA. After college she was employed by Piggly Wiggly offices and the First National Bank in Norton, VA. She taught a Sunday School Class at Rugsby Freewill Baptist Church on Caney Ridge and did substitute teaching in Dickenson Co. Schools.
   Al'Frances loved to travel and had many interests. She was a lifetime member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and a member of Historical Society of Southwest Virginia.
   We wish to thank the staff of Bristol Regional Medical Center for their excellent care of Mrs. Rowlett.

    Arch was a member of The Rural Missionary Baptist Church of Banner, who loved and served the Lord, Odd Fellow Lodge and Banner Knockus Club and a U.S. Army Veteran.
    He also enjoyed fishing, but his greatest joy was being with family and friends. He will be remembered by everyone for his love and kindness.
    Arch was former employee of Jordan Coal Company, co-owner of Modern Cleaners and former owner of Jordan Septic Tank Service.
    He was preceeded in death by his wife, Peggy Lou Porter Jordan and his parents, James Garfield Jordan and Cora Mae Jordan; also by brothers, Clarence Jordan, J.B. Jordan, Millard 'Dill' Jordan; sisters, Nanny Mae Davidson, and Alice Robbins Dishman.

Roy Urshell Kern of Coeburn, VA born November 15, 1927 died November 17, 2011 at Indian Path Medical Center after suffering a brief illness.
    Roy Kern was preceded in death by his parents, Okla and Adolphus Kern and his brother Hubert Kern.
    Roy is survived by Elsie Marie Vandiver Kern, his loving wife of 62 years, 9 months and four days.
    Roy was co-founder of the Coeburn Rescue Squad, a member of Coeburn Masonic Lodge #97, the Moose Lodge and was a U.S. Army veteran. Roy owned Roy Kern Trucking and retired from Virginia Iron Coal and Coke Company. Roy was an avid fisherman and traveler.
    Roy is also survived by Ray and Katie Sanders, friends of 39 years and godson Roy Allen Sanders, brother-in-law, Charles Ralph Vandiver, nephew, Joseph Patmus Vandiver and nieces Barbara Vandiver and Gina Slemp.

Dungannon, VA ~ Mary Magdalene Sanders Brickey, 91 passed away Friday, December 23, 2011 at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport Tennessee.
    She was the daughter of the late Andrew Jackson Sanders and Martha Victoria Sanders; also preceded in death by her husband, Robert Brickey; five sisters, Eura Prince, Ethel Spears, Cula Back, Cressia Keel and Elizabeth Mae Stansberry; four brothers, Arthur Ray Sanders, Jack Sanders, Alonzo Sanders and Hansel Sanders.
    Survivors include one son, Michael L. Brickey Sr. and wife, Cora Peters Brickey, Dungannon; two sisters, Jean Laney and husband, Virgil, Hampton, VA and Lola Cooper, Germantown, MD; one brother, Bufford Sanders, Coeburn, , grandson, Michael L. Brickey, Jr., Castlewood; granddaughters, Jeana L. Brickey Hall and husband, Dallas, Dungannon, Anna L. Brickey Luttrell and hudband, Michael, Pounding Mill, and Rachael L.    Funeral services for Mary Magdalene Brickey will be held on Monday, December 26, 2011 at 7:00 P.M. at Estes Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. R. L. Crawford and Rev. John Thompson officiating.     Survived by two sons, Arthur 'Byrd' Mills Jr. and wife, Gail Mills, Winston Salem, NC and Danny Mills, and wife, Brenda Mills, Coeburn; four sisters, Barbara Damron, Dorton, KY, Dee Smith, and husband, Leighton, Corinth, KY, Mae Sexton, Jenkins, KY, Sherry Smith, and husband Albert, Jenkins, KY; brother, Terry Sturgill, and wife, Phyllis,Vine Grove, KY; sister-in-law, Molly Sturgill, Jenkins, KY; Grandchildren, Jason Mills, Winston Salem, N.C., Justin Mills and wife, Micah, Winston Salem, N.C., Melanie Davis and husband, Chad, Franklin, N.C.; one great granddaughter, Isabella Grace Mills and a host of nieces, nephews and friends and cat, Fancy.

Coeburn, VA ~ Odessa Marie Peters McCarty, 85 passed away Friday, December 30, 2011 at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport Tennessee.
    She was the daughter of the late Bruce W. Peters and Ivalee E. Reed Peters; also preceded in death by her husband, Vernoy McCarty.
    Survivors include four daughters, Margaret Staples, and husband, Freddie, Nashville, TN, Sandra Leonard, and husband, Ronnie, Big Stone Gap, Sheila Farmer, and husband, Bruce, Sharon Lawson, and husband, Rev. Mike Lawson all of Coeburn; son, Thomas McCarty, Rogersville, TN; two brothers, Bob Peters and Wayne Peters, both of Johnson City, TN.

   Funeral services for Odessa Marie McCarty will be held on Sunday January 1, 2012 at 1:00 PM at Estes Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Johnny Sexton officiating. SFC Herbert Floyd Rash

Big Stone Gap, VA ~ SFC Herbert Floyd Rash, 59 of Big Stone Gap and Blackwater, passed away Friday, December 30, 2011 at Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, Tennessee after an extended battle with cancer.
   SFC Rash was employed with the Virginia Army National Guard's 1032nd Transportation Unit and FMS #9 Shop in Gate City, VA as Field Maintenance Supervisor.
    SFC Rash was one of the few remaining Vietnam Veterans still on active duty in the state of Virginia and was awarded three Purple Hearts and three Bronze Stars for wounds received while in country. He was also a veteran Granada, Honduras, Desert Storm and Gulf War Campaigns, was awarded many Army Achievement Medals and Commendations of meritorious service during his Career.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Gladys Greear Rash, brothers, Ernest Mellard, Jerry Rash and sister Linda Blair.
    Survivors include his wife, Mary Markham Rash and seven children, Nicholas Owen, Alicia Kallen, Seth Kallen, Angela Rash, Beth Winebarger, Bill Rash, Linda Landers, two granddaughters, two grandsons and several nieces and nephews.

   Funeral services for SFC Herbert Floyd Rash will be held on Tuesday January 3, 2012 at 1:00 P.M.  at Estes Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Noah Taylor officiating. Military Graveside services and burial will be follow at Greenwood Acres Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held Monday,  after 5:00 P.M. at Estes Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Southwest Virginia Regional Cancer Center, in Norton, VA and Christine Laguardia Phillips Cancer center of Kingsport, TN.
