Jerry Claude Fugate, Jr. 77, passed away Sat. Dec. 3, 2011 at Bristol Regional  Medical Center Selet Speciality Hospital.
   He went to be with his Lord and SaviorJesus Christ.
   He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran.
   He was the son of the late Claude and Verna Fugate; also preceeded in death by 4 sisters, Joanne Crawford, Irene Steffey, Lillian Smith and Willie Smith; brother, Tom Fugate.
   Survivors include wife, Janice Fugate, Nora, VA; daughter, Robin Fugate Plaster and husband, Mike; special grandson Braden Scott Fugate; sister, Stella Dickenson; step children, Patricia Mitchell, Christine Mullins, Betty Rose, Marvin Holbrook, David Edwards, and Ashley Kiser; step grandchildren, Trish Keith, Diane Sutherland, Shawn Mullins, Crystal Swiney, Jamie Holbrook, Everette Holbrook, Kevin Massey, Kaitlyn Counts, and Casey McBride; several step great great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

   Funeral services will be Wed. Dec. 7, 2011 at 2:00 at McCoy Chapel with Rev. Roger McCoy officiating. Visitation will be held Wed. Dec. 7, 2011 from 11 AM till funeral time. Burial will be in McCoy Cemetery.

Coeburn, VA ~ Jim Jones, 85 died Sunday, December 4, 2011 at Johnson City Medical Center in Johnson City Tennessee.
    He was a retired employee of Pittston Coal Coal, a U.S. Navy veteran of the WW II and a member of Coeburn Masonic Lodge #97 AF & AM.
    He was the son of the late Joseph Wheeler Jones, Sr. and Lucy Lee Leonard Jones. Also preceeded in death by four sisters, Peggy Lee Wagner, Anne Campbell, Helen Gray Bond, and Kathleen Fugate; three brothers, J. W. Jones Jr., Charles Scott Jones Sr., and Ray Leslie Jones.
    Survivors include his wife, Alice Jones, Coeburn; two son, Jimmy Fayre Jones, Johnson City, TN  and Charles Steven Jones, Coeburn; sister, Betsy Dingus, Coeburn; brother, Jack Jones, Coeburn; two grandsons, Brian and Jonathon Jones and one great-grandson, Landon Jones; several nieces and nephews.

   Visitation for Jim  Jones will be held on Tuesday December 6, 2011 after 6:00 P.M. at Estes Funeral Home Chapel and Funeral services will be held at 7:30 PM with Rev. Barry Sarver officiating. Entombment  will be Wednesday December 7, 2011 at Temple Hill Memorial Park. The family will meet at the funeral home and leave at 10 AM in procession to the cemetery. Coeburn, VA ~ Elsie Marie Vandiver Kern, 82 passed away Tuesday, December 6, 2011 at Norton Community Hospital in Norton Virginia.
    She was a retired employee of C & P Telephone and a Pioneer.
    She was a long time member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Coeburn, Chair of the Wise County Redevelopment and Housing Authority, Secretary of Wise County Electoral Board, member of Coeburn O.E.S.
    She was the daughter of the late John Patmus Vandiver and Rosie Vandiver; also preceeded in death by her husband of 62 years, Roy Kern and a brother, Bud Vandiver.
    She is survived by one brother, Ralph Vandiver, Coeburn; one nephew, Pat Vandiver, Coeburn; two nieces, Barbara J. Vandiver, Virginia Beach, and Gina Slemp, St. Paul; friends, Ray and Katie Sanders, and godson Roy Allen Sanders.

   Funeral services for Elsie Marie Kern will be held on Saturday December 10, 2011 at 11:00 A.M.  at  Estes Funeral Home Chapel with Father Michael Herbert officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwood Acres Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held Friday after 5:00 P.M. at Estes Funeral Home. Coeburn, VA ~ Charles Edward Grimes, 88 passed away Thursday, December 14, 2011 at Abingdon Manor in Abingdon Virginia.
    He  was a retired forman for Westmoreland Coal Co., attended Banner Assembly of God Church and was a U.S Marine veteran of WW II.
    He was the son of the late Robert D. Grimes and Bertha A. Robinette Grimes; , also preceeded in death by his wife, Mildred Hall Grimes, three sisters, Margaret Hazel Holbrook, Dorothy Virginia Ellis, and Aura Smith; two brothers, Ronald Grimes and Carl Grimes.
    He is survived by One  Brother, David Grimes, Lynchburg, VA.

   Funeral services for Charles Edward Grimes will be held on Friday December 16, 2011 7:30 PM at Estes Funeral Home Chapel with Rev, Glen Hammacker officiating. Visitation will be held Friday after 5:00 P.M. until funeral time at Estes Funeral Home. Burial will be 1:00 P.M. Saturday December 17, 2011 at Temple Hill Memorial Park.     She was the daughter of the late John  Page and Annie Emaline Page; also preceeded in death by one son, Lelland Matthew McCoy and one sister, Christine Page.
    She is survived by her husband, George R. Harvey, Coeburn; daughters, Rosemary Harvey, Coeburn, Eva Blanken, and husband Kenny, Big Stone Gap, Diane Davis, and Fiancee Johnny Gray, Weber City, Denise 'Pooh' Harvey, Nashville, TN, Patsy Harvey, Coeburn; sons, John Dewey McCoy, and wife, Helen,  Ransom Harvey, and wife, Tammy, Nathan Harvey, and fiancee, Brandi Edwards, all of Coeburn, Danny Harvey and wife, Stephanie, Big Stone Gap, and Steven George Harvey, Pocahontas, VA; two brothers, Beldon T. Page and wife, Alice, St. Paul, and Ransom Paul Page and wife, Lori, Sandwich, IL; adopted grandson, Brandon Artrip; 26 grandchildren, several great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, along with many other loved ones.

Jacksonville, FL ~ James Ralph Miller, 73 passed away Sunday, December 18, 2011 at Baptist Medical Center South in Jacksonville, Florida.
    He was a former resident of  the Coeburn, Virginia area.
    He was the son of the late Milam Davis Miller and Ruth Hurd Miller Hayes; also preceded in death by a sister, Joyce Ann Miller and a brother, L. C. Miller.
    Survived by Two  Daughters, Teresa Comstock, Grapevine, TX and Rebecca Amos, Front Royal, VA; One Son, David Miller, Sterling, VA; two sisters, Dorothy Gibson, Kingsport, TN and Jewell White, Coeburn, VA; three brothers, Hoyt Miller, Jacksonville, FL, James Miller, Clinchport, VA and Farell Hayes, Coeburn, VA; 5 grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

    She was the daughter of the late Andrew Jackson Sanders and Martha Victoria Sanders; also preceded in death by her husband, Robert Brickey; five sisters, Eura Prince, Ethel Spears, Cula Back, Cressia Keel and Elizabeth Mae Stansberry; four brothers, Arthur Ray Sanders, Jack Sanders, Alonzo Sanders and Hansel Sanders.
    Survivors include one son, Michael L. Brickey Sr. and wife, Cora Peters Brickey, Dungannon; two sisters, Jean Laney and husband, Virgil, Hampton, VA and Lola Cooper, Germantown, MD; one brother, Bufford Sanders, Coeburn, , grandson, Michael L.     She was the daughter of the late Bruce W. Peters and Ivalee E. Reed Peters; also preceded in death by her husband, Vernoy McCarty.
    Survivors include four daughters, Margaret Staples, and husband, Freddie, Nashville, TN, Sandra Leonard, and husband, Ronnie, Big Stone Gap, Sheila Farmer, and husband, Bruce, Sharon Lawson, and husband, Rev. Mike Lawson all of Coeburn; son, Thomas McCarty, Rogersville, TN; two brothers, Bob Peters and Wayne Peters, both of Johnson City, TN.

SFC Herbert Floyd Rash

Big Stone Gap, VA ~ SFC Herbert Floyd Rash, 59 of Big Stone Gap and Blackwater, passed away Friday, December 30, 2011 at Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, Tennessee after an extended battle with cancer.
   SFC Rash was employed with the Virginia Army National Guard's 1032nd Transportation Unit and FMS #9 Shop in Gate City, VA as Field Maintenance Supervisor.
    SFC Rash was one of the few remaining Vietnam Veterans still on active duty in the state of Virginia and was awarded three Purple Hearts and three Bronze Stars for wounds received while in country. He was also a veteran Granada, Honduras, Desert Storm and Gulf War Campaigns, was awarded many Army Achievement Medals and Commendations of meritorious service during his Career.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Gladys Greear Rash, brothers, Ernest Mellard, Jerry Rash and sister Linda Blair.
    Survivors include his wife, Mary Markham Rash and seven children, Nicholas Owen, Alicia Kallen, Seth Kallen, Angela Rash, Beth Winebarger, Bill Rash, Linda Landers, two granddaughters, two grandsons and several nieces and nephews.

   Funeral services for SFC Herbert Floyd Rash will be held on Tuesday January 3, 2012 at 1:00 P.M.  at Estes Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Noah Taylor officiating. Military Graveside services and burial will be follow at Greenwood Acres Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held Monday,  after 5:00 P.M. at Estes Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Southwest Virginia Regional Cancer Center, in Norton, VA and Christine Laguardia Phillips Cancer center of Kingsport, TN.
